CBRE today released "The Office IT Environment in the Cloud Era" – a new report that looks at how office occupiers are using technology such as cloud-computing. It also outlines how to construct an office environment best-suited to support the use of these new platforms.
Arrival of 5G is set to further increase the importance of cloud services
Japan will introduce 5G services this year. 5G will dramatically improve communications compared to 4G and is highly anticipated due to its potential to promote the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Cloud resources with high arithmetic processing capability and large storage volume will be essential for the operation of IoT and AI. With the adoption of 5G, the importance of cloud computing is set to grow further.
Increased use of cloud services will downsize office-based server rooms
In recent years, as companies shift system operations to the cloud, office-based server rooms have downsized. The cloud not only offers high flexibility and stability for system operation, but also, enables the use of IT systems supplied by cloud vendors. This means that companies are transitioning to a flexible model in which they use, rather than own, these systems.
Increase in IoT and AI-related devices and the benefits of deployment
While the use of cloud computing spreads, there is also an increasing number and types of IoT and AI-related devices/technologies. A variety of IoT and AI devices and systems are being introduced in offices in order to enhance workers' convenience, comfort, and productivity. These include sensor-equipped devices such as surveillance cameras, security that employs biometric authentication, chatbots, and Robotic Process Automation (RPA).
Tailoring the office IT environment to new technologies
To deploy IoT and AI-related technologies effectively in offices, companies will need to consider issues including network configuration, the positioning of devices, and optimal cable routes. The quality of an office's IT facilities - including its electrical capacity and communications environment - will likely become an increasingly important criterion in building selection.
